As of September 1 2007, the Board of Directors included the following members:
Dr Jeno Kaltenbach (Hungary) has served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the ERRC since March 2009. A renowned constitutional and minority rights expert, lawyer and professor of law, he received his degree in law from Szeged University in 1975. Presently, he is in charge of the special committee of the Hungarian Parliament which reviews public complaints against police. Dr Kaltenbach previously served as the Hungarian Parliamentary Commissioner (Ombudsman) for National and Ethnic Minority Rights. He developed this institution and managed this position most successfully for 12 years, setting both the precedent and the framework for future Ombudsmen. He also drafted several laws in Hungary, most importantly the Act on Minorities of Hungary. He was also the Hungarian Representative to the Council of Europe's Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), of which he was Vice-Chair between 1998 and 2003. Since February 2005, he has served as Vice-President of the European Ombudsman Institute. Additionally, he was a co-founder of the Minority Roundtable and won the Minority Award in 1995.
James A. Goldston (USA) is the Executive Director of the Open Society Justice Initiative. Previously, as Legal Director of the ERRC, he spearheaded the development of ground-breaking civil rights litigation before the European Court of Human Rights, United Nations treaty bodies, and domestic courts in 15 European countries. He has written widely on issues of human rights and racial discrimination. He has engaged in law reform fieldwork and investigated rights abuses in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. He is a Lecturer on Law at Columbia Law School.
Maria Virginia Bras Gomes (Portugal) is Senior Social Policy Advisor in the Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity in Portugal. Her work includes coordination and preparation of reports on the implementation of international instruments (European Union, Council of Europe, United Nations) and participation in interdepartmental and multidisciplinary groups on social security, social protection, social development, social action and international relations policies and practices. She has been serving as a Member of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights since 2003, acting as Co-Rapporteur for General Comment 19 on the Right to Social Security and Rapporteur for the Revised Guidelines for national reports on the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Additionally, she is a member of the International Board of the Programme on Women's Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; the High Level Advisory Group on De-institutionalisation of the European Social Network; the Scientific Committee for the World Forum on Human Rights; and the Board of the Portuguese UNICEF Committee.
David Joyce BL (Ireland) is a practicing Barrister with an interest in Constitutional Law, Human Rights, Public Administration and Housing Rights. Prior to qualifying as a Barrister, he worked in community development with local and national Traveller advocacy organisations. He was a founding member of the Irish Traveller Movement (ITM) in 1990. From 1998, he worked with the ITM as National Accommodation Officer and from February 2003 until August 2005, he was Legal Policy Officer of the Traveller Legal Unit (TLU). He has contributed to a number of reports and publications in regard to Travellers' rights. Mr Joyce is a guest lecturer at various universities, delivering lectures and presentations within the Equality Studies modules at NUI Maynooth and the Travellers, Human Rights and the Law module within Trinity College Dublin's LL.M. degree programme. In 2005, Mr Joyce received the Irish Person of the Year Award for his work and dedication to the cause of human rights for Travellers.
Dr Krassimir Kanev (Bulgaria) is Chair of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee and Member of the Executive Committee of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF). He teaches human rights and sociology of law at the state universities of Sofia and Plovdiv (Bulgaria). He is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.

Managing Director - Robert A. Kushen
Robert Kushen is the ERRC Managing Director. Previously, Mr Kushen served as Director of International Operations at the Open Society Institute and most recently as Executive Director of the Harvard PEPFAR programme, which provides HIV treatment and care to over 100,000 patients in Africa.
Deputy Director - Isabela Mihalache
On 1 September 2009, Isabela Mihalache joined ERRC as Deputy Director after serving on the ERRC's Board of Directors. Previously, Ms Mihalache worked as the Senior Program Manager of the Open Society Institute's Roma Initiatives. In that role, she supported the elaboration and implementation of European and national policies for the integration of Roma, while leading and supporting regional and international mobilisation of Roma.
Staff
Tara Bedard is Programmes Director. She holds a Masters of Business Administration - International Management from Centenary College, USA, a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Development Studies from the University of Toronto, Canada, and a post-graduate diploma in International Project Management.
Dzavit Berisha is Research and Publications Officer. He has a secondary school degree as a miner. Due to the war in Kosovo he didn't have the opportunity to further his education. Since 1999 he is a human rights activist, working to defend the rights of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian refugees in Macedonia.
Dora Eke is Programmes Assistant. She has a degree in Computer Programming (Information Systems option) from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Canada. She managed the Freedom Forum Library at the Center for Independent Journalism for seven years.
Csilla M. Farkas is Operations director. A communications professional who graduated from Eotvos Lorand University Budapest, Faculty of Humanities, holds degrees in English and American Studies and Romanian Literature. Has undertaken post graduate work in film, sociology and communications. Worked extensively in areas of public relations, public affairs, as well as media.
Judit Geller Paralegal. She holds a BA degree in Public Administration from the Corvinus University of Budapest and a Law Degree from the Eotvos Lorand University Budapest. She studied one academic year at the Law Faculty of University of Leuven, Belgium and completed a traineeship at the European Court of Human Rights.
Sinan Gokcen is Information Officer and Turkey Consultant. He is also the Coordinating Editor of the Roma Rights journal, ERRC's flagship publication. He is a human rights activist and journalist with around 20 years of experience in Turkey, Europe, the Balkans and Central Asia. He is a founding member of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, one of the pioneering human rights organisations of Turkey. He earned an MA degree in Human Rights Law from Central European University as an Open Society Justice Initiative Fellow.
Andrea Jamrik is Project Financial Officer. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Budapest's University of Economic Sciences (renamed Corvinus University), and a tax advisory degree from the University in Miskolc. She worked as a chief accountant until joining the ERRC in 2009.
Csilla Kacso is Project Financial Officer. She has a degree in Banking and stock exchange and a degree in Physics and Physics teacher, both from the Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania. She mostly worked in the field of financial investment, as a software expert, and as an economics and physics teacher. She joined the ERRC in 2006.
Idaver Memedov is International Advocacy Officer. He is a graduated lawyer and is currently completing his MA in Public Policy at the Central European University. Prior to joining the ERRC, Idaver worked with the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights of the Republic of Macedonia as a lawyer and researcher.
Hajnalka Nemeth is the Office Secretary. She started her career as the Secretary to the Executive Director for a Construction Company. She moved to Budapest in 1990 and worked at MTI (Hungarian News Agency) as an English Language Operator. She has been with the ERRC since 2005.
Ostalinda Maya Ovalle is Women's Rights and Equality Coordinator. She graduated from the University of Sussex (U.K.) in Social Anthropology and Development Studies and holds a Law Diploma from The College of Law (U.K). Prior to joining the ERRC she was involved in grassroots work in various countries.
Julianna Oros is Financial Officer. She graduated from the in Budapest University of Technology and Economics and a post-graduate degree in statistics. She also completed a tax-advisory course. She joined the ERRC in June, 2004.
Anna Orsos is Programmes Assistant. She studied Human Management in PTE-FEEK and completed an international program in NGO Management, Advocacy and Public Campaign Facilitation at the International Peoples' College in Helzingor, Denmark. She worked as a regional coordinator at the National Educational Integration Network and at the Amrita association for Integrated education of Roma youth. Her experience includes work with PHARE, HEFOP and many research projects.
Catherine Twigg is Research Officer. She completed her BA and MA at New York University in European Studies, with a focus on Policy and Politics.
Hajnal Vernes is Financial Manager. She holds a Masters degree from Corvinus University of Budapest, Faculty of Economics and a diploma in Finance and Banking from Budapest Business School, Faculty of Finance and Accountancy. She worked as a Financial Manager for Civic Education Project and as a Financial Coordinator at the Open Society Institute, in the Open Society Justice Initiative department.
