PUBLICATIONS:
October 19, 2000: Published the position paper “Protecting Romani
Refugees around Europe: A Position Paper by the European Roma Rights Center”.
November 3: Published the Country Report Campland: Racial
Segregation of Roma in Italy. The report details ERRC concerns
in Italy.
Campaigning for Roma Rights:
November 2: Issued a statement on the Occasion of the Fiftieth
Anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights.
November 3: Held a press conference in Rome, Italy, to announce
publication of the ERRC Country Report Campland: Racial Segregation
of Roma in Italy.
November 10: Sent a letter to Dr Bernard Kouchner, Special Representative
of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Interim Administration
Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), to express alarm at the killing of four male
returnees in the village of Doševac/Dashevc near Priština, Kosovo.
November 20: Sent a letter to Slovak General Prosecutor Milan
Hamzel to express concern at the lenient sentence handed down by a Slovak
court in the 1999 shooting death of a Romani man in police custody.
December 8: Organised together with the Human Rights StudentsÂ’
Initiative of the Central European University (CEU), a Roma Rights day
in the CEU, Budapest, Hungary.
CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS:
October 8: Attended a meeting convened by the OSCE on the occasion
of the publication of several reports concerning Roma and migration, Bratislava,
Slovakia.
October 10-13: Participated as NGO resource group member in the
European Conference against Racism and the preceding NGO Forum, Strasbourg,
France.
October 23-24: Participated in the OSCE conference in Warsaw,
Poland, where the ERRC presented a statement focusing on discrimination
issues.
October 26: Took part in the OSCE conference entitled “Roma in
the EU Candidate Countries — Challenges of Integration”, held in Vienna,
Austria.
October 30: Took part in a conference on legal aid across borders
sponsored by EU and Council of Europe, Paris, France.
November 1-2: Attended a meeting of the Council of EuropeÂ’s Specialist
Group on Roma/Gypsies, Budapest, Hungary.
November 2: Participated in the Race Directive Meeting held at
the Open Society Institute, Budapest, Hungary.
November 4: Attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the
European Convention of Human Rights, Rome, Italy.
November 13-19: Participated in the meeting of NGOs from Central
and Eastern Europe, in preparation of the 2000 World Conference Against
Racism in Warsaw, Poland.
November 20-21: Attended a meeting on hate speech convened by
the journal Index on Censorship in Budapest, Hungary.
November 29: Participated in a workshop on humanitarian intervention
at the London School of Economics, London, UK.
