Czech Roma Turned Back at German Border

On July 27, 2002, Radio Prague reported that a group of thirty Roma from the Czech Republic were denied permission to enter Germany on the evening of July 26, 2002. According to Radio Prague of July 29, 2002, the group, from the Ostrava region in the east of the Czech Republic, had planned to apply for political asylum in Britain, but did not have the required amount of money or insurance for travel to Britain. Such incidents have been reported in the past. One previously reported incident of discriminatory refusals by German border officials to allow Czech Roma to enter Germany is available on the ERRC's Internet website at: German border authorities refuse entry to Roma .
