ERRC urges Romanian government to condemn anti-Roma remarks of public officials

26 April 2010

Budapest: Yesterday, the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) sent a letter to the Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc and President Traian Băsescu expressing serious concern about the recent anti-Romani speech by senior government officials in Romania, namely Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Baconschi. In its letter, the ERRC urged the government to promptly condemn the anti-Roma remarks and issue a formal apology. Furthermore, the letter echoed the demand of Romanian Roma rights groups in calling for the resignation or dismissal of Foreign Minister Baconschi.
