The Supreme Court of Croatia confirms war crimes sentence for Šakić
5 December 2000
The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina reported on November 1, 2000, that the Supreme Court of Croatia had confirmed a twenty year prison sentence for Mr Dinko Šakić, former commander of the Jasenovac concentration camp in Croatia. Mr Šakić was in charge of the camp from May to October 1944, during which time at least 2000 Serbian, Jewish, Romani and other prisoners died. The Zagreb County Court had found Mr Šakić guilty of war crimes against the civilian population on October 4, 1999, and given him the maximum sentence of twenty years in prison. Mr Šakić had appealed this decision (see "Snapshots from around Europe, Roma Rights 4/1999).
