United Nations Human Rights Committee Reviews First State Report Issued by Greece

21 July 2005

The Human Rights Committee (HRC) reviewed Greece and made public its concluding observations on March 22nd and 23rd, 2005 at its eighty third session. This was the first time that Greece was reviewed by the Committee as their state report arrived 6 years late. The Committee notes with concern the fact "that the Roma people remain disadvantaged in many aspects of life covered by the Covenant" and recommended that

18.(a) The State party should intensify its efforts to improve the situation of the Roma people in a manner that is respectful of their cultural identity, in particular, through the adoption of positive measures regarding housing, employment, education and social services.

(b) The State party should submit detailed information on the results achieved by public and private institutions responsible for the advancement and welfare of the Roma people.

The Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM) and Minority Rights Group – Greece (MRG-G), Athens based non-governmental organisations, provided extensive documentation and testimony to the HRC during the session. More information can be found on the GHM website at: http://cm.greekhelsinki.gr/index.php?sec=194&ctg=243. To view the report by the HRC in its entirety please visit http://www.ohchr.org.
