10 April 1997

Roma National Congress reported on March 16, 1997 that a court in Frankfurt, Germany had ordered a policeman accused in connection with the March 1994 physical abuse of a Romani man to pay three thousand German marks in damages to Roma Union in Frankfurt. The case involved a police officer who, in the course of a police identity check, knocked the director of the organisation unconscious by smashing his head against a door-frame. The same policeman had earlier been fined nine thousand German marks on a similar charge.
