ERRC Calls on Prime Minister of Turkey to Intervene to Halt Forced Evictions of Romani Communities

30 January 2007

On 1 December 2006, the ERRC sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Turkey calling for the Prime Minister's urgent attention and interference to remedy the disastrous situation of numerous Roma families in Istanbul and elsewhere in Turkey who have been subjected to forced evictions and other serious violations of fundamental human rights. This second letter to the Prime Minister within three months, was prompted by information about the death of a five-month old baby in Istanbul, reportedly as a result of exposure to extreme living conditions after the destruction of her family's housing.
