ERRC seeks field researchers for trafficking study

The ERRC seeks eight consultants to work on a project it is currently implementing in partnership with People in Need Slovakia (PiN) on trafficking of Romani children, youth, women and men in Eastern and Central Europe. Within this project, implemented in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria, the ERRC and PiN will analyse the effectiveness of national laws and policies on prevention and victim support, and are looking for consultants for its implementation. The selected applicants will be engaged on a part-time consultancy basis over a period of seven months (end of October 2009 to May 2010).

Lead Researchers

The project requires four qualified applicants for the role of Lead Researchers in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania (one per country) with expertise in trafficking issues. The consultants will conduct qualitative field research focusing on vulnerability factors, support services and preventive measures for Romani children, youth, women and men victims of trafficking.

In addition to the regional languages, all consultants are required to communicate with the ERRC and produce reports in English of a high level.

The Lead Researchers must be based in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary or the Czech Republic, and should be familiar with service providers and shelters in the relevant country. The Lead Researchers will:

  • Participate in a training programme for researchers on the study, organised by the ERRC and PiN;
  • Work in close collaboration with the Community Field Researcher to:
  • Conduct field research on vulnerability factors, support services and preventive measures existing for children, youth, women and men on trafficking in their country, with a special focus on Roma;
  • In accordance with the methodology provided, submit national field research reports to the ERRC and revise as requested;
  • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive report on trafficking Romani children, youth, women and men in Europe, by providing recommendations.


The Lead Researchers should have a law or social sciences degree and at least two years experience working on trafficking issues in one of the target countries. Experience working on trafficking of Roma is preferred. The Lead Researchers must have experience in conducting field research and analysis.



Community Researchers:

The project also requires four qualified applicants for the role of Community Researchers for Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania (one per country) with expertise in trafficking issues. The consultants will conduct qualitative field research focusing on vulnerability factors, support services and preventive measures for Romani children, youth, women and men victims of trafficking.

The Community Researchers should speak the national language of the country concerned. Knowledge of Romanes is a strong asset, as is personal experience working in Romani communities.

The Community Field Researchers must be based in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary or the Czech Republic, and should be familiar with issues affecting Roma as relevant to trafficking of human beings in the relevant country. The Community Field Researchers will:
  • Participate in a training programme for researchers on the study, organised by the ERRC and PiN;
  • Work in close collaboration with the Lead Researcher to:
  • Conduct field research in the Roma community or among Romani individuals on vulnerability factors, access to support services and preventive measures existing for children, youth, women and men on trafficking in their country.
  • In accordance with the methodology provided, assist the Lead Researcher in the drafting and submission of national field research reports to the ERRC, and revise as requested.
  • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive report on trafficking of Romani children, youth, women and men in Europe, by providing recommendations to the Lead Researcher.


The Community Field Researchers must have at least two years experience working with the Roma community at a local level. Experience working on trafficking of Roma preferred. Each Community Field Researcher will report to the corresponding Lead Researcher for the target country.
