Destroying Progress / Progressing Destruction: EU Romani Women and Children in France

This report examines the effect of human rights violations on Roma from Romania living in France, with a special focus on the situation of women and children. Participatory research for the report was conducted in early 2014 with six Romani research assistants. The findings show that EU Roma living in France experience disproportionate levels of poverty, continue to live in inadequate housing conditions, and have low access to social benefits and low awareness of rights.
The report also highlights the specific human rights violations of forced evictions and of restricting access to education, and the subsequent psychological problems and challenges concerning integration. It outlines the legal framework and the general situation and includes suggestions for stakeholders in assuring that human rights are respected.
The ERRC and Voyageurs Créateurs set out to capture testimonials from children; those still waiting for a place in school, those who are now in school after being put on waiting lists, and those who were directly enrolled without complications. This video tells their story.
