Romanian Government to Establish New National Agency for Roma

According to an October 7, 2004 communication of the Romanian government spokesperson, the Romanian government will establish the National Agency for Roma. The National Agency for Roma will replace the Office for Roma Issues currently under the supervision of the General Secretary of Government's Department for Inter-Ethnic Relations. The National Agency for Roma is to be established directly under the General Secretary of Government as an autonomous body, which will assume responsibility for the implementation of the Strategy of the Government of Romania for Improving the Condition of Roma, including budgetary administration and monitoring and evaluating the activities of local and central public administrative bodies in relation to the Strategy. Eight regional offices will support the work of the National Agency for Roma.
