The European Roma Rights Center considers supporting Romani students of law and public administration among its most important activities. We are deeply persuaded of the necessity for a strong generation of legally competent Roma to engage in activism, if a Roma rights agenda is ultimately to be secured. We are also convinced that to date, Roma have been deprived of the opportunity to become involved in human rights work on behalf of other weak groups, such as ethnic and religious minorities in your country and other countries, migrants, women and homosexuals, to name only a few. A university degree in law and/or public administration can be an important basis for rights work - whether on behalf of Roma or of others.

Formal legal training, however, does not make an activist, and a generation of Roma who have completed law school will be only that: a generation of Romani lawyers. Only sustained and engaged human rights praxis makes the advocate. The skills you learn in law school will only have Roma rights value if they are used to bring about social change. In addition, it is not even clear whether legal training alone can provide the kind of creativity in rights work required to engage in human rights work well. The ERRC strongly encourages you to become involved in grassroots, human rights activism at the community level. In addition, we suggest that it is in your and the public interest that you seek opportunities for further training at any one of the growing number of institutions in the U.S., Canada, Western Europe and elsewhere in the world that can provide supplementary human rights training and/or other perspectives on human rights work. A number of such institutions offer scholarships and other programmes designed to support talented members of minority communities. Any programmes existing are very probably publicly announced. A good first stop is the ERRC links page, where a number of organisations offering training programmes have links: http://errc.org/links/index.shtml

Some training programmes are available through the ERRC: the ERRC provides human rights training in the framework of an internship programme, organises a summer workshop for Romani activists, as well as other training workshops. To find out more about these programmes, please check our website at: http://errc.org/grants/index.shtml. Participating in these programmes can provide the opportunity to learn about human rights activism in theory and in practice, as well as to meet and learn from experts who have been working in this field for a long time. In addition, taking part in such programmes can provide you with access to the valuable resources in the ERRC library.
