May: ERRC provided assistance with the publication of Hungarian Romani literary and public review Phralipe in English. The issue is devoted to civil rights activities of Hungarian Roma triggered by housing discrimination cases.

July 17: Published the Country Report A Pleasant Fiction: The Human Rights Situation of Roma in Macedonia.
Campaining for Roma rights
June 4: Submitted written comments on the situation of Roma in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for consideration by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) in Strasbourg, France.
June 25: Filed amicus brief and attended oral argument in the hearing of Assenov v. Bulgaria before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
July 21: Submitted written and oral testimony at the hearing of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, United States Congress, Washington, DC. ERRC legal director James Goldston appeared on CNN International in the "Q and A with Riz Khan" show on Roma in Europe.
Conferences and meetings
June 6: Took part in a panel on Romani exodus of the Casablanca magazine, at the "People's Europe '98" conference organised at the London School of Economics by various non-governmental organisations, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the main British political parties.
June 6-7: Held the first meeting of the ERRC Legal Advisory Committee in London, Great Britain.
June 18-19: Presented a paper at the "Central European Seminar on the Prevention of Torture" organised in Budapest by the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) and Constitutional and Legal Policy Institute (COLPI).
June 30-July 3: Organised the "Street Law Conference" in Budapest for 35 Romani students of law and social work from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Macedonia, Romania and Ukraine.
July 5-12: Trained young Romani leaders at a meeting of the Forum of European Roma Young People in Strasbourg, France, organised by the Council of Europe.
July 15: Presented ERRC activities at a meeting of Slovak Romani activists discussing strategies for Roma for the forthcoming local elections in Slovakia.
July 17: Participated in a panel discussion on Roma in the Czech Republic organised by the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Roma Section in Terezin, the Czech Republic.
September 1-5: Participated in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conference on human rights celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, in Yalta, Ukraine.
