ERRC Requests Follow-up Information on Portuguese Water Issue

26 May 2011

Budapest, 25 May 2011: Today, the ERRC sent a letter to municipal authorities in Vidigueira, Portugal, concerning the provision of water to an informal Romani settlement in the town. Welcoming the restoration of water services in the wake of an earlier ERRC intervention, the ERRC expressed concern that the circumstances and conditions of the return of water are unknown to residents and that deplorable living conditions prevail in the settlement. In its letter, copied to the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commission and the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, the ERRC requested that Vidigueira authorities provide detailed information about the provision of water to the Romani settlement.
