ERRC urges investigation into clash between Macedonian police and Roma

20 April 2010

Budapest, 20 April 2010: Today, the European Roma Rights Centre sent a letter to the Macedonian Minister of Interior expressing its concern about the violence between Special Forces police and Roma in the Suto Orizari market, which reportedly left around 40 Roma injured, including minors. The situation escalated during a customs inspection, culminating in violent clashes between about 200 Special Forces police officers and Romani civilians. The ERRC urged the Minister to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident.
