Recognition of lifelong dedication in Hungary

10 April 2001

A Romani man, Mr Mihály Lakatos, was awarded the Individual Donor of the Year for the year 2000 award on February 6, 2001. Mr Lakatos is a retired teacher who has worked tirelessly in organising and running summer camps and extra-curricular activities for Romani children. The Non-profit Awards are organised jointly by the Non-profit Information and Training Center (NIOK) and the Soros Foundation, and were established in 1995. In previous years, the awards have recognised those who have given financial support, but Mr Lakatos, who was selected from more than fifty nominees, has been recognised for his giving of time and energy to the cause of Romani education.
