‘You are going to die now’ – ferocious firebomb attack on sleeping Roma family by neo-Nazi terror group in Hungary

By Bernard Rorke

Masked Neo-Nazis broke down the door of a sleeping family in the Hungarian town of Cegléd, shouting “You are going to die now!” They threw a flaming Molotov cocktail into a room where eight young children, including an infant lay, and mutilated the father with a brush-cutter before fleeing.

According to a report by TV2 News, the attackers smashed the glass of the front door, then threw the Molotov cocktail into the house. The father who managed to extinguish the fire, fought off the attackers. In the struggle, he was attacked with a machete-like brush cutter and part of his finger was cut off.  The attack occurred two weeks ago but was reported on 6th May 2026.

The mother described the horrific attack

"The kids were screeching in terror, and I was screaming to my partner ‘don’t let them cause they will kill us all.’ As the bits of the smashed glass were flying inwards, my partner called out ‘who is it?’. The older man, Zoltan B, was shouting ‘police’ and ‘you will all die now!’ … if they had gotten to us, they would have killed us all."

The family told the reporter they recognized the attackers as locals, a father and son. According to TV2, the incident may have been sparked by two of the children chopping a couple of acacia trees. The land-owner approached the family house, and ‘the conflict escalated’. He physically dragged the mother out of the house, when her partner returned and intervened, the land-owner left roaring and shouting abuse, only to return later that night – masked, armed and prepared to kill.

The report stated that the attackers belonged to an extremist group calling themselves ‘Peacekeepers’. Among the items later seized by police were swastika-emblazoned knuckle-dusters. What is more alarming is that police seized several weapons, ammunition, homemade devices, pyrotechnic materials, gunpowder, and firearm components at the suspects’ property.

Police launched an investigation for armed trespassing and grievous bodily harm causing permanent disability, and they also issued a restraining order against the perpetrators, who remain at large. According to the family, this is not enough: since the attack, they have been terrified to leave their home.

This was nothing less than a terrorist attack, a racially-motivated assault on a sleeping Romani family by a professedly fascist group. The police investigation must not ignore the racist motivation of this attack, and the existence of vigilante terror groups ideologically primed to murder Roma. Law enforcement need to prioritize tracking down and rooting out any such groups.

Negligence by law enforcement in the past allowed neo-Nazis to wage a murderous series of attacks on Romani communities across Hungary in 2008 and 2009, that left six Roma slain and over 50 others wounded. That murderous wave of violence that was visited upon Roma in Hungary 17 years ago, was a shock reminder of the extent to which racist hate speech and scapegoating of ethnic minorities can incite lethal racist violence. This latest attack is a reminder that the fascists haven’t gone away. Hate speech by Hungary’s neo-fascists, including members of parliament, paramilitaries and vigilante groups, still prevails. There can be no room for complacency.

The European Roma Rights Centre has written a criminal complaint to the public prosecutor and relevant local authorities to insist that the racist motivation for the attack is taken into account in the ongoing investigation.
